Built amid the coalfields of South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, Secunda rose from the ashes of the 1973 oil crisis when the powers-that-be made the decision to be less dependent on oil. Today, South Africa is one of the seven largest coal-producing countries and one of the top five coal-exporting countries in the world.
The name ‘Secunda’ is derived from the town’s position as the second extraction refinery producing oil from coal, after Sasolburg, which is about 140km to the west. As coal is the main ingredient in the industrial process, Sasol Two was developed around a coal field. The five coal mines, namely Brandspruit, Middelbult, Bosjesspruit, Twistdraai and Syferfontein, form the largest underground coal mining complex in South Africa.
In the past few years there has been a lot of investment into new shafts to prolong the lives of the Secunda mines.
Exhibitors should include companies that supply hydraulics; diesel machines; electrical valves (control valves); PLC (Allem Bradlys); winders; fridge plants; conveyors; pumps; steam traps; heat tracing equipment; non-metallic fibre wounds; clock spring wrapping; painting applicators; hand tools; fire-retardant coatings; and fishbone gaskets. If coal is your business, Secunda is the place to be.
