Much like MTE’s expos in Richards Bay, the Pongola expo will be an industrial show that incorporates the Kiepersol Colliery in Mpumalanga, the Pongola sugar mill and surrounding communities.
The Kiepersol Colliery, of which Jindal Mining owns a majority stake, is located near Piet Retief in Mpumalanga and is one of the largest producers of anthracite coal in South Africa well as a preferred supplier of metallurgical anthracite coal to leading ferroalloy manufacturers in the country.
The colliery has a private railway siding and a dedicated storage and loading facility at the Richards Bay dry bulk terminal. The railway siding has been designed and constructed to accommodate 100 truck Jumbo trains. The Kiepersol colliery employs 800 people, including contractors and has more than 46 million tons of coal reserves, with an expected lifespan of at least 15 years. The processing plant has a capacity to wash 120 000 tons of a coal a month.
Pongola is a small town situated in a beautiful and lush Zululand valley and is home to one of three sugar factories owned and operated by RCL Foods. RCL FOODS Sugar & Milling Division is one of the largest producers of sugar in South Africa. The sugar production units, Komati and Malelane mills, are in the Lowveld region of Mpumalanga province, while Pongola mill is in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The group’s total production capacity is around 720 000 tons of sugar a year.
Pongola Mill was established in 1954 and was purchased by RCL FOODS in 2009. In a normal 39-week crop the mill capacity is 1.4 million tons of cane. It produces about 140 000 tons of sugar at a crush rate of around 250 tons cane and 30 tons of sugar an hour. The Pongola mill also has a refinery and packaging plant on site. About 115 000 tons of sugar is refined into top quality white sugar and packaged in commodities ranging from five-gram sachets for restaurants and cafes to one-tonne bags for the industrial market. A small percentage of refined sugar is also exported with 25 000 tons of brown sugar packaged for direct consumption in the local market.
Exhibitors should include any company that supplies equipment or products to the sugar industry or that supplies equipment or products that can be used in the sugar production process.
