For those of you who ever read Bryce Courtney’s classic The Power of One, you would remember that most of the story is set in 1940s Barberton. Much has improved over the past 70 years, but Barberton remains well known and reputable as a golden land of opportunity.

Barberton Mines is the birthplace of BIOX (‘Biological Oxidation’), an environmentally friendly process of releasing the gold from the sulphide that surrounds it, using organisms that perform this process naturally. Barberton is still used as the training facility for all BIOX plants globally.

Deep in the heart of South Africa’s Limpopo province is Mogalakwena mine. This large opencast mine, situated near the town of Mokopane, within the Mogalakwena Local Municipality, is wholly-owned by Anglo American and represents one of the largest platinum reserves in South Africa.

The mine was established in 1993 and is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world. In 2014, Mogalakwena delivered more than 370 000 ounces of equivalent refined platinum, an increase of 70 000 ounces over 2012.

Anglo American is the largest producer of platinum worldwide, accounting for nearly 40% of the total global platinum production. The company mines over two million ounces of platinum annually, along with more than one million ounces of palladium.

Exhibitors should include companies that supplies equipment or products to the platinum industry mines, or suppliers of equipment or products that can be used in the platinum mining process. Mogalakwena is part of southern Africa’s world-famous platinum belt so, if you’re involved in that business, then this is the expo for you.

Whether you’re interested in gold, uranium or diamonds, Welkom’s reputation in mining shines. Located in the Free State, some 140km north-east of Bloemfontein, Welkom is an ideal location for MTE, thanks to its renowned mining culture. Welkom is also well known for its agricultural and manufacturing sectors, not to mention its impressive sporting culture that covers motorsport, soccer and rugby.

Exhibitors we would like to see include those involved with dust control, noise reduction, new technology for ventilation, underground sanitation, PPE for woman, in-stope for support drilling, pumps, tramming technology, lubrication, LED lighting, blast barricades, underground mining machines, lock outs, mud vacuum machines, derailing devices and fall of ground support.

Situated at the foot of the majestic Magaliesberg mountain range, Rustenburg is home to the two largest platinum mines in the world and the world's largest platinum refinery.

The area went through a rough patch in 2016, when clashes between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) reached new heights, but there has also been an increased focus on social development because of the mining activity in the area. Rustenburg is one of only five South African cities to have a community foundation: the Greater Rustenburg Community Foundation seeks to ensure that regional development reaches all levels of society.

Some of the major mines in this area (the employees of which will visit the expo) include:
Impala Platinum
Aquarius Platinum Mines
Kroondal Chrome Mine
Wonderkop Chrome Smelter
Lannex Chrome Mine
Omnia Fertilisers
Bathopele Platinum Mine
Siphmelele Platinum Mine
Thembelani Platinum Mine
ACP Services
Base Metals Refinery
Waterval Smelter
Precious Metals Refinery
Royal Bafokeng Platinum

All in all, despite its chequered past, Rustenburg is a town with a bright future and MTE hopes this expo is a fruitful experience for all.

Exhibitors we are looking for are specifically focused on automation, fall of ground management, track maintenance, fatigue management, working at heights in a shaft, hopper maintenance, dust suppression, noise reduction and conveyor belt cleaning technology.

Malelane is an area teeming with activity and, although there is no mining activity in the area, MTE has decided to host its first trade and technical exhibition in the town considering previous successful mining exhibitions hosted there integrated the sugar industry (such as with the Richards Bay expo). The farms in the region produce sugar cane, sub-tropical fruit and winter vegetables.

The South African sugar industry is cost competitive, ranking in the top 15 out of about 120 sugar producing countries worldwide. The sugar industry (which stretches across two provinces of South Africa, namely Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal), makes a positive difference to the lives of more than a million people and is a catalyst to economic growth, employment and development. Sugar, aside from its obvious nutritional and economic benefits, can produce molasses which can be used for animal feed.

Exhibitors we would like to see sugar and agricultural suppliers, piping and irrigation companies
