MogalakwenaMogalakwena— Anglo American’s flagship mine.

Deep in the heart of South Africa’s Limpopo province is Mogalakwena mine. This large open cast mine, situated near the town of Mokopane, within the Mogalakwena Local Municipality, is wholly-owned by Anglo American, and represents one of the largest platinum reserves in South Africa.

The mine was established in 1993 and is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world. In 2014, Mogalakwena delivered more than 370 000oz of equivalent refined platinum, an increase of 70 000oz over 2012.

The Platreef project is in the process of constructing the sinking shaft which started in 2016. The main sinking phase will advance at a rate of about 45m per month until it reaches the planned final depth of 1 025m below surface in 2018. Also included is the development of four shaft stations at depths of 450m, 750m, 850m and 950m below surface.

Anglo American is the largest producer of platinum worldwide, accounting for almost 40% of the total global platinum production. The company mines over 2Moz of platinum annually, along with over 1Moz of palladium.

Exhibitors should include companies that supply equipment or products to the platinum mining industry mines or that supply equipment or products that can be used in the platinum mining process. Mogalakwena is part of southern Africa’s world-famous platinum belt so, if you’re involved in that business, then this is the expo for you.
