Black rock mine in the Northern Cape’s
Kalahari manganese field.

Hotazel is a town located in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district in the Northern Cape. The town primarily serves the surrounding manganese mines. The Hotazel Manganese Mines division of BHP Billiton still owns and operates two other manganese mines in the area: Wessels (underground) and Mamatwan (open cut). There is also huge investment coming into the area to develop black rock operations.

Wessels mine is an underground operation situated 300m below the surface. Access to the workings is achieved by means of a vertical shaft and two incline shafts and the nature of the ore body lends itself to a mechanised room and pillar mining method.

The second mine, Mamatwan, is also a manganese mine. The open pit operation exploits low grade manganese ore, compared to the northerly located Wessels mine that exploits high grade manganese ore. It is the latter that accounts for most of the secondary, collector minerals, as opposed to the low grade mineralisation. As a result, the Mamatwan mine produces few secondary, collector-type, aesthetic species.

Other mines in the area include Kalagadi Manganese, United Manganese of Kalahari, Kudumane and Nchwaning mines. Many of the mine operations in the area are manganese producers.
